About us
Nastro was founded in 2000 by a small group of local amateur astronomers. Initially meeting in a local pub and then a village hall, the club found an ideal location to meet at Hauxley Nature Reserve in 2003.
Nastro obtained funding for an ongoing outreach programme in its early years from Awards for All, Northumnberland County Council, local businesses and private donors. We have delivered astronomy sessions to countless schools and many other local organisations.
Nastro secured funding for a 14 inch research grade telescope and a custom made observatory was built to house it at Hauxley Nature Reserve in 2008.
Our regular meeting place at the Visitor Centre was destroyed by fire in 2010, but thankfully the observatory was unharmed. We now host our bi-monthly meetings in the function room at The Trap Inn, Broomhill until the Visitor Centre is rebuilt.
Our members come from all walks of life. Our astronomical interests range from archeoastronomy to modern developments in cosmology. We have committed visual observers and advanced astro imagers. Beginners and advanced amateurs alike will find others to share their experiences at Nastro.

Community Outreach ProgrammeWe have an ongoing outreach programme to encourage interest in Astronomy primarily by providing sessions for local community groups.
In the past we have provided sessions for schools, libraries, play and youth schemes, Women's Institute groups, and hospitals. We have broadcasted information on radio shows both locally and nationally to educate people about current events in astronomy. Please contact us if you would like to know more about our work in the community or to organise an outreach session. |
